What’s Going on Hosting Edition

So, I for the past few years I was hosted by Holdfire, a small company owned by Jordan Miskowisc/jordanriane of Ngametv. Generally it was a horrible host, the worst host I’ve ever had, and I was with Lypha. That’s saying something. There was a lot of downtime, she clearly did not know what she was doing, and was always rude to her customers. I’m not the only person who feels that Holdfire and its support was lacking. But they were cheap. Especially in early September. Supposedly sometime between the beginning of June (when Holdfire’s Twitter account stopped being updated) and then Jordan sold Holdfire. No one was notified, and if there was a new owner they clearly had less interest in it than Jordan. EditDNS which provided services for Holdfire was closing their users were encouraged to switch to their company. To let people know they were having scheduled downtime for their clients. Which of course affected their clients clients as well. Meaning me and all the other Holdfire users. So much downtime. Whoever was running Holdfire didn’t know/care about this. When I saw the message from EditDNS and realized that Holdfire could soon disappear due to the negligence of its owner, I began backing up my site. I made it in time, and luckily still had my birthday money to pay for a new host. It was between three companies, SharkSpace, WHB, and Beachcomber. I had domain monitors on sites I knew were hosted by them since the last time I was trying to decide on a new host. Then it was between four, SharkSpace, WHB, Beachcomber, and Holdfire. Clearly I made the bad choice there. I wasn’t even sure about my choice then either, which is why I set up the domain monitors, so next time I would be. All did well for the first couple years, then the first two started having more and more downtime. Beachcomber was the only one that was consistently up. And they had a half off deal. I couldn’t afford reseller hosting anymore, but I’m okay with that. This is even better in some ways since all my sites are together again instead of being spread out through several different accounts.

Before signing up I sent Beachcomber an email, just to make sure they were still around. Unlike Holdfire they don’t seem to have a forum, blog, or Twitter account, so there’s no way to tell if they’re still active. Just looking at Holdfire itself wouldn’t clue you in, but seeing that their Twitter account hasn’t been updated in almost 4 months is enough. I soon got an email back saying they were still alive and kicking, with an lol thrown in. A little unprofessional, but prompt. After signing up I soon got a call from them, which I was expecting. Most hosts call to confirm but most hosts are big companies who use automated systems. I had to talk to an actual, human person. I am determined never to do it again!!! Outside my family at least… At least there’s comfort in the fact that phone anxiety is actually pretty common. After that my account was set up within minutes. So far Beachcomber has had great uptime. But there have been some problems, the biggest being something to do with the way the server is set up. I’ve never had this problem with any host before, but there was some server setting interfering with WordPress and Enthusiast. It really, really drove me crazy, but eventually I found a solution to it, and now everything is working perfectly now. Though my IP was locked out for several hours due to my tinkering.

I have unpinned my status post, but I am still not done uploading everything. I had almost 24000 files to upload, which is a lot for a normal connection. With my borrowed wireless that has close to dial-up speeds it takes fucking forever. Some files I had to upload twice because the first time they didn’t upload correctly. I still have a few thousand at least to go, but I’ve got all my fanlistings up, as well as this blog, which are the important things. TFL and TAFL have had to deal with a lot of messages from me for the past year, what with all my internet and hosting problems. Hopefully now they will both be corrected.

My mother was wrong, and Cyndy was coming back tonight, not yesterday. So I’ll call her tomorrow and Monday, and hopefully, hopefully, hopefully I’ll have internet installed this week or the first week of October. The internet has been particularly shitty the past few days, not that it isn’t always. The way to find out whether internet is working for me is this: Is this internet not working? It’s not working. Is the internet working? It’s not working. “The internet is working” just means Comcast hasn’t set up their blockade, “The internet isn’t working” means they have. It doesn’t mean I can always actually get on. I really want to get internet before this connection goes down again. Because it is going down again. This has been happening since February and every time it happens again sooner, and for a longer period of time. I know the signs now and when the blockade is approaching, and the signs are here.

Oh, and I had to be responsible recently… I had money leftover after hosting and… I had to spent $36 on flash drives. *sigh* I’m getting 32 GB, but you don’t actually get all that. It would actually take 60 GB to backup everything I need to keep safe, but I don’t have that kind of money right now. Spending that much on two 16 GB drives that won’t even hold everything I need was hard, when I could buy a lot more other things for less, but it’s important.

4th Birthday

I better do this before I forget again. Today is this site’s 4 year anniversary. It’s been online since September 6, 2006. At least I think that’s 4 years, I did fail math every year since the 7th grade… I’ll post something again soon, I just haven’t felt like it recently. But I can tell you the next post will involve my mother, my aunt, Kuroshitsuji II, Mitsudomoe, and Shiki. So, the usual. Since I’m trying to catch up with the Bleach manga right now, I’m using a Bleach icon.

Another Clovis Layout
Posted by Megan on July 28th, 2010

After a little over a year, I have made a new layout for Lisabee.org. The first layout to grace LBE since its conversion to WordPress was “Artistic” a Code Geass layout featuring Clovis la Britannia, and it officially debuted 7/1/09. This is the second, and the second layout to showcase Clovis. It uses fan art from Pivix (credits at the bottom), and is titled “A Light Heart.” Amber mentioned the layout being warmer than the last one, and with that and Euphy’s comment about the warm colors Clovis used in his paintings, the layout was named A Light Heart. Why Clovis? Because he’s my favorite character after Schneizel, and he’s so underrated. You never see him in graphics, so I use images of him. If you don’t understand why he’s so likable find a translation and listen to the Code Geass sound episode Teikoku no Kyoudai. Clovis actually became governor general of Area 11 for Lelouch. I have been testing this layout out for a few days now, and getting opinions on it. I decided it was finally satisfactory and decided to switch them today. This layout was hell to work with. I spent at least 30 hours struggling and tinkering with it. The layout took a little while, with about 28 layers and 3 textures, but the coding was the real issue. There were a lot of problems with it (WordPress doesn’t like me) and even after those problems were worked out I still didn’t think it was good enough to use. Now I do. Please let me know what you think, and anything you think might improve it. If there’s a problem you see I want to know, so I can find a solution that my visitors will like.

76 Wallander Icons
Posted by Megan on July 21st, 2010

76 icons of the British television show Wallander have been added. Wallander is a British mystery/detective series of based on a Swedish series of television shows and books. It stars Kenneth Branagh as detective Kurt Wallander, and airs on BBC One in the UK and PBS in the United States. I don’t love Wallander. I don’t have the same kind of feelings for it as Poirot, which I absolutely adore, but I do it. I don’t know why. Since PBS is airing it’s last “new” Poirot episode on Sunday, I found myself missing Wallander. I found out it’s not playing until October, and since I never focus on the future, I can’t look forward to it. So I made some icons to make myself feel better. Tomorrow I’ll do a real blog post, and a couple days later I’ll add some more icons. Definitely Kuroshitsuji, but other than that I haven’t decided on which other anime/manga series to do.

23 Code Geass Icons
Posted by Megan on December 24th, 2009

Another icon post, this time with 23 CC avatars from the anime Code Geass. The last two are actually the first two I did, when I was experimenting with various things in Paint Shop Pro, and the rest were based on those, but edited with the cropping I preferred. I’ve put most behind a cut so they don’t overwhelm the page, like the Cardcaptor ones did. I also added 3 cat icons in the other category.

19 Cardcaptor Sakura Icons
Posted by Megan on December 13th, 2009

I hadn’t done any graphics in a while, and was really itching to, so I made some icons. I haven’t downloaded my Code Geass scans yet, so I looked up some Cardcaptor Sakura images on AnimePaper.net. Still stucking using PSP7. I tried to download my copy of 8, so I could use scripts, but Norton found a virus in it and deleted one of the files. Can’t find a working download for Photoshop CS either.

Don’t Hold Your Fire
Posted by Megan on July 5th, 2009

This is ridiculous. Holdfire has never been a good host, but this is completely unacceptable. And that’s only what they caught! A troubles staffer I talked to at TFL said that Holdfire had been particularly bad lately. I guess a lot of fanlistings have been getting troubled because of Holdfire’s crap. And what’s more, I found Holdfire through TFL! Don’t that beat all?

I hate holidays. There’s no mail, nothing on TV, and everything’s always closed. So much inconvenience over so little. I’m not a little kid, so holidays don’t mean much to me anymore. Not even Christmas or Thanksgiving. I’m not usually with my family on those holidays, and we don’t have any money so lot’s of food and gifts are out of the question. And holidays like Independence Day are the worst, because you really get nothing out of them. There’s fireworks. Big whoop, I’m not five and I’m not a man, so I don’t find all the sparkly colors or loud noises fun. I especially don’t find them fun when there are idiots setting them off right outside my house, and starting the day before. It’s not like New Years people. And I forgot (I don’t know how since they do it every year) how they always play country music while showing the fireworks on TV. Even worse patriotic country music. I just can’t stand to listen to them “sing” about how much they looove America in their redneck drawl.

It doesn’t help that I have a headache. All I’ve eaten today are about 1 turkey sandwich with mayo (because I didn’t finish the first one, then later I had half of one), milk, and maybe 3 or 4 potato chips. But now sometimes when I eat I get an awful migraine. I thought it was the chips that did it, even though I only had a few, but it got worse after the second half. I don’t know what it is, but it’s happening more and more often, and it sucks because before a few months ago (when all my health went to hell) I’d never really had migraines before and I hate it.

SciFi (which is now becoming SyFy for some stupid reason) has been having a Twilight Zone marathon for the past few days, and I was watching a little yesterday but gave up today because most of the episodes I’d already seen or didn’t want to see. TVLand is having a Roseanne marathon so I guess I’ll watch that for a while before I go to bed. I have to get up at around 11 tomorrow to go over my great aunts and shred some paper of hers, while my mom is supposed to come over and clean, but she didn’t last time. I was there waiting until almost 8 o’clock and she never came. Now she wants to clean in case we get Verizon since Comcast raised their prices again. She better clean fast because I’m not staying over there too late. Cynthia doesn’t have air conditioning, and Masterpiece Mystery is playing the new Miss Marple tomorrow. And since I’m being kicked out of the day, I guess I won’t be getting any school done. Oh well, be it on her own head.

New Layout
Posted by Megan on July 1st, 2009

If you haven’t noticed there’s a new layout. If you haven’t been here before, then you probably wouldn’t. But there is. It features one of my favorite characters in Code Geass, Clovis la Britannia, a very underrated CG character. I’m calling it either An Unfinished Life or Mirage, which is what I’d call his fanlisting if I ever wrench it out of the owner in the future. I’m pretty happy with the way this layout turned out, I think it might be my best work yet. But now I’m noticing a few things that I wish I had changed, that for some reason I never noticed before. I’m also happy with the way the coding turned out. The coding of the layout itself, not WordPress which I’m going to be having nightmares about for weeks. I don’t know how anyone could work with WP, it drove me crazy, and it still isn’t working right. WordPress truly is hell. I also made a layout with Schneizel and Lelouch, but the theme switcher plugin isn’t compatable with the latest version of WordPress so I can’t show it to you. It’s not as good as this one, but I still like it. I tried to do one with Azula from Avatar too, but Paint Shop Pro isn’t cooperating with me anymore. Apparently I’ve used up all my creativity there for a while.

There’s still a few things I need to update around here, some is just general maintenance, others are entire rewrites of content pages. And some pages still have to be built. Uh, I’m starting to get discouraged again. Most pages are online, but there might be some broken links. If they aren’t fixed in the next update, or you find any other errors (like with psycho WordPress) please let me know.
