The AFC Championship is today, which will determine whether the Steelers or the stupid Jets will go to the Super Bowl. Obviously Pittsburgh should win. When I found out the Steelers had won the last game I dressed up my Subeta avatar up in black and gold to show my support. Even my headshot is awesome. You can hover over them for an explanation of each. Regardless of the outcome, I’m going to be changing my avatar again in after. I’ve had a great outfit put together for a while that I’ve been waiting to use. It took me at least 30 million sP (the wig alone cost 20 million) and looks great. I might even put it on Style File I like it so much.
I was going to watch the game, but I decided not to do that to myself. If I’m awake when the game is on I’ll watch some anime or Skins on Netflix. After hearing everyone raving about Skins (the original UK version) I finally decided to watch it, and it’s available on Instant. So far I’ve seen three episodes. It’s actually a pretty good show, but depressing. I don’t know why these characters always ever together, they don’t act like friends they treat each other like crap. Tony is an arrogant bastard (who is not very good looking and can’t sing as well as he thinks he can), Michelle is a bitch and a slut, and Sid is just pathetic. Cassie and Jal are my favorite characters right now, Chris and Anwar are okay too.
I started playing City of Wonder on Facebook. I had to do it for a task to earn CSC on Subeta, and it was okay so I kept playing. It’s pretty simple so I can just keep the window open while I’m on Subeta or Netflix and click over to it when I need to. I named my city Damocles in honor of aku-nii. I also changed my username on Subeta from gwnedolyne to Schneizel, just because. As soon as I can figure out how to code profiles on Subeta I’m going to make a Schneizel layout for mine.
I decided to post today, since 1/11/11 is a special occasion, and so is my blogging. First up are two incidents that I forgot to write about last time. The first happened a few days before Christmas. I was just going to bed and I heard some male voices outside, and then a loud crash a minute or so later. I thought one of the idiots had thrown a rock at the metal awning over the door, because that’s happened before. Then Tiger (my/aunts cat) went crazy and started running around the house, up and back down the stairs again. I went down and Cynthia said someone had thrown a rock at Tiger when he was in the window. The window was fine, but Tiger wasn’t. I went looking for him and found him hiding under the sink. When Cynthia came over he hissed at her and then leapt out and went running again. I found him again upstairs hiding under a rocking chair, and then later on hiding behind an end table. We were very worried about him, since he’s an older cat, and overweight. Even hours later the next day he would barely eat and wouldn’t leave the room without me. He did get over it, and is fine now. We don’t know who did it, because they left right after, but I would say based on their voices there were about 3 of them in their late teens or early twenties.
The second thing that happened was on Christmas Eve. Cynthia had gone to church, and after she left I went to bed. When I saw her the next day I found out that when she came home she stopped at the house of the woman across the street, and ended up slipping and falling on porches stairs. Luckily she didn’t break anything. She’s in her 80’s and has osteoporosis so it’s a miracle she’s alright.
The Code Geass LJ posted a scan of the new Code Geass Gaiden – Boukoku no Akito. The comments exploded but I haven’t been able to bring myself to go back there. I am still not happy about this. Somewhere my psychic message for more Code Geass got messed up. Maybe it’s because I wished it in English, and they didn’t understand me. I desperately want more Code Geass, but this and Renya is not what I wanted. Someone there said there might be characters from the real Code Geass in it, like Schneizel, which caused a pang in my poor heart. I’d be so happy if just Schneizel was in it, and not like Nicholas D. Wolfwood was in Trigun: Badlands Rumble, he did not get enough air time… No, I’d still be happy if it was just that!
It’s a new anime season, and I’m “watching” mostly everything. And by watching I mean, watching the first episodes then getting around to the rest when I feel like it. I’m only just finishing some anime from several seasons back now. Here are my shows.
Rio: Rainbow Gate – Don’t ask me why I’m watching this. Like always I knew what I was getting myself into, but I did it anyway. I did enjoy making fun of it though, like the blushing breasts, and trying to figure out whether Mint will grow up to be a stripper or a hooker.
I also have already chosen my favorite character.
IS: Infinite Stratos – I think I would like this anime a lot more if it wasn’t a mecha. Yes, then it would just be a bunch of annoying characters in a boarding school, but it’s a futuristic school, so that makes it more interesting! Seriously, I think the environment is the most interesting thing about this show. My first thought when watching the anime – the clouds are pretty. This is really stupid, but the clouds are pretty. The school itself is very… pointy. But I like all the floaty hologram things, and the dorms. Okay, the things I like most about it are the holograms and the students bedrooms. Can we just devote the episodes to those? It would at least be tolerable if there was a character I could devote myself to. When I saw the blonde girl I thought maybe her, then she opened her mouth – bitch. Boy main characters sister – bitch. Girl main character – I think she’s supposed to be tsundere, which just means bitch to me. The main character – meh. So far the most likable characters are the girls who were fangirling over boy main character in the first episode.
Yumekui Merry – All the ANN reviewers were going on an on about Yumekui Merry, and a fan on MAL promised it wasn’t really about warring cats, or as stupid as it’s description made it sound. It is as stupid, and it really is about cats.
GOSICK – I had high hopes for this anime, and the first episode really let me down. Victorique’s clothes are pretty. If I was rich I dress like that all the type, and then I’d just be eccentric, instead of crazy as I am now. They’re so pretty! The thing I liked most about Gosick though was the end theme, Resuscitated Hope by Komine Lisa. Also, it took stupid me going to the official site to figure out it’s actually Gothic.
Mitsudomoe Zouryouchuu – This is what I’ve been waiting for! My Mitsudomoe! I love my Mitsudomoe! And how do they repay me for my love? A pointless episode about the Gachi Rangers! I am not watching this for the Gachi Rangers! I am watching it for
Hitoha the Marui triplets! What I wasted episode. I guess it’s because they needed filler because the manga isn’t that far ahead, but if that’s the case I’d rather they make something up rather than waste everyone’s time with this. There’s only 8 episodes for this one, and now ones been wasted. Hopefully, the rest of the episodes will be devoted to Hitoha our wonderful Marui sisters. Hitoha!
Freezing – I was expecting this to be a lot worse than it was. Yes, there are melon boobs flying everywhere, panty shots every other frame, and clothes that just pop off during battle, but after the anime below this, this was actually very enjoyable. I’m shocked that this fan service palooza might end up being very entertaining.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica – This is the best episode I’ve seen yet of this season, and seems to be the most promising. I am very, very shocked that it seems the best anime there is this season is a bloody, fan service show, and a mahou shoujo. But damn, this was all around good! The characters were all interesting, there interactions were believable, great setup. Can’t believe the characters thing. Haven’t seen one bimbo yet.
Beelzebub – Also a lot better than I thought it would be. It helps that the main character is good looking, and I like his seiyuu. Very good fit for the character.
Level E – Haven’t watched this yet. No, I am not just watching this because of the shirtless guy in the promo art. How shallow do you think I am? The summary sounded good, but when I saw the PV for it on YouTube, and it looked very stupid. Except for the beginning and end of it, which wasn’t actually a part of the anime.
Kore wa Zombie desu ka – Haven’t watched yet.
Dragon Crisis! – Haven’t watched yet.
Fractale – Not aired yet.
There may be others, but I can’t remember. FukuJun isn’t in anything this season. :tears: He’s in at least one anime that’s currently airing, plus one stupid show online that I’m going to have to watch now just because he’s in it (Starry☆Sky).
In addition to the new anime I’m also watching other things. I finished Shiki, Oreimo, Pandora Hearts, Trigun, Trigun movie, Angel Beats, Shinrei Tantei Yakumo. I’m about to finish Okami Kakushi and the first Sailor Moon. I’m also watching Star Driver, Hidamari Sketch x 365, and episodes from various other episodes. I was enjoying Kanon until animals were brought into it. I don’t really feel like watching it now. Shiki went from horror, to infuriating (really, getting pushed around by vampires), to horrifying. I loved it. Oreimo was okay, Kuroneko was my favorite, I couldn’t stand Kirino. Really liked Pandora Hearts, Gil is so cute. I really liked Trigun until my favorite character died. After a while Vash’s naiveté started to get on my nerves, and I blame him for my fave characters death. Angel Beats was good, I loved the OVA. As for Psychic Detective Yakumo, Haruka was dumb as a rock, and her and Yakumo. Yakumo was cute and I like his seiyuu, Ono Daisuke. I wish there had been more actual plot and less individual episodes. I think the whole deal with his father is really interesting, some backstory would have been nice. Okami Kakushi and Sailor Moon are okay, Star Driver is so crack, Hidamari Sketch is so mellow. I like to watch it before I go to bed, particularly after a more dramatic or scary anime, it really helps me to calm down.
ANN says Bleach is ending. People in the comments say it definitely won’t, but I’m not so sure anymore. I love my stupid Bleach and my stupid Bleach fillers. I always thought it could survive a nuclear bomb, like a cockroach, but I’m not so sure anymore. There’s been so much talk of it ending, for months.
I’m following Yamane Ayano on Twitter now. I know I’m going to forget and then wonder why there’s Japanese in my Twitter feed. Chrome automatically “translates” everything, but only for what’s on the page at the time. She recently said the Finder series isn’t ending, which it seemed to be. I’m happy but who knows what’s going to happen to it now, and my beloved Junjou Romantica and Okane ga Nai, because of those bastard Japanese. The Japanese have earned my eternal hatred, and when I die I hope to become a Ju-on and haunt them/destroy them, and many violent J-horror movies will be made about me.
So, Christmas… yeah. I hate holidays. They’re such an inconvenience. There’s no mail, everything’s closed, there’s nothing on TV, none of the sites I read are updated, and it’s all you ever hear about whether you want to or not. Sometimes it lasts for months. They started playing Christmas music on PBS in September. I’m spending my day doing two things, Christmas events on my game sites, and watching horror movies. I think Jesus would be proud. I’m looking for snowflakes on Zantarni, reindeer on Kingdom of Knuffel, Christmas eggs on Dragon Cave, and Xmas Pokemon on VDex Project. I already have the Xmas Pokemon, but I want to get one Xmas Staryu and one Xmas Voltorb caught on December 25. I’d also like my Dragon Cave Christmas dragon to be born on December 25, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to get one today. It’s hard enough as it is, but Snap Links keeps stopping working and then I have to close the site and start again. By then I’ve missed out on 10-20 eggs, and sometimes all the eggs are gone and I have to wait another hour to try again. Subeta’s holiday events are luckily not too labor intensive, and practically over. Unfortunately, I’m not going to get the Melody’s Visitor achievement, since I apparently missed a day. I’ve been on Subeta every day, so I’m pissed that I forgot to go to Melody’s Cottage one day. Magistream’s Christmas event has sucked. I wasn’t on last year, so I didn’t know what was going to happen, and they didn’t bother to say until the 21st, so I missed the event and the eggs. I’m starting to really hate that site.
Anyway, like I said, instead of Christmas movies I’m going to be watching horror movies. I haven’t decided which ones yet, whatever is streaming on Netflix, but they’ll all be foreign, probably Asian, and one will most likely be The Heirloom. I watched Phone, a Korean horror movie, on Wednesday, and Noriko’s Dinner Table and The Orphanage on Thursday (Jap, Spanish), and took a break on Friday for my sanity’s sake. Phone was surprisingly good and somewhat original. I was expecting a Korean version of One Missed Call, but it was actually nothing like that, and it had actual reasons for “long haired Asian girl” and “hair coming out of tap”, two popular things in Asian horror movies. Noriko wasn’t actually a horror movie, and was very good. I wouldn’t say I liked it, but it was good. It started off very boring, but eventually picked up pace. It’s a very screwed up story, and just reinforces the fact that the Japanese as a whole desperately need to be medicated. It’s just a movie, but those feelings and attitudes that drive the movie are very prevalent in Japanese society. The Orphanage – oy. I make a point of only watching horror movies during the day, but I had so many problems getting this one to play, that it was getting dark by the last hour of the film. So I was freaking out even more. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the others, but it was scary, and sad, and the acting was very good, particularly from the lead actress.
My mother has been harassing me to come down for Christmas since Thanksgiving.
And today she finally had to accept that I am not. She said she’d bring up a plate for me when the food is done. The psycho bastard is making standing rib roast. He acts like a child. Whenever she calls he is always talking in the background. 3 year olds do that. At this point he should know that when someone is on the phone you do not talk to them, or talk over them. It’s because he’s so obsessive and controlling, she can’t talk on the phone to someone because it doesn’t involve him. He’s the reason she’s been harassing me about coming done, because he “wants to meet me.” I did meet him a few months ago. My mom called and asked if I wanted McDonalds, but since I wanted a meal instead of something off the dollar menu (I can’t eat another gristle burger) Cynthia had me take money done. When I got there they were both standing on the porch, and I was furious. Luckily, a guy from down the street had been walking his dogs (purty huskies), which distracted them, and my mom and I walked to McD. My mom said they’d been arguing because he wanted to meet me, and my mom told him I didn’t want to meet him. We weren’t inside for a minute when the psycho bastard came in. He followed us to McDonalds. Like a stalker. So on the way out she made me say hi to him. Well, I said the word hi, I wasn’t looking at him. I didn’t see why I should be forced to say hi to a stalker. So, she says I have to meet him again because I didn’t do it right last time. BS. I have nothing to do with him. And when I say harass I mean harass. Asking over, and over, and over again. I hate that bitch and I hate holidays!
Obviously I haven’t felt like posting lately. I still don’t, but I’m forcing myself to. Today I finally went to the eye doctor. Ever since last year I’ve been pushing to see the eye doctor at Sears because I remembered that he was nice. I just didn’t remember how nice. The eye doctor there is such a nice guy, and seems like a very good doctor. So if anyone in the Pittsburgh area is looking for an eye doctor, go see the guy at Sears in South Hills Village. It’s tough getting out there now, for those who don’t have a car, Port Authority cut (and continues to cut) many of the bus and street car services. We had to take a bus downtown, then catch a street car because there aren’t any street cars that go all the way to South Hills Village for our area. You either have to go downtown and take the street car, or take the street car here, get off, then take another street car the rest of the way. I didn’t wait very long to see the doctor. My appointment was for 1 PM, but he saw me before then (he didn’t realize that until I got in – I was just there so he saw me). After checking my eyes he said the one of them, I think it was the left, had developed a mild (he said something about 2, level, minus, step?) astigmatism. He also said that my current prescription is too strong, and that this one should be much better, possibly even at little better than 20/20 (I didn’t know there was anything better). Since I had checked the headaches box, he asked about it, and I told him I was supposed to have an MRI done, because I’d been getting headaches for years, but that last year they got a lot worse, sometimes so bad that I couldn’t even stand. He asked why my PCP wasn’t sending me to a neurologist, since that would be better. I remembered that when I first went to him he talked about having me see a neurologist, but last time it was tough even getting the MRI from him. I think I know why, more on that later. Either way, he said, it was good that I was getting the MRI because any time there’s a big change in symptoms like that (like suddenly getting the worst headache you’ve ever experienced) you should get tests done. I also mentioned to the eye doctor that one of the reasons I was having the MRI done was because of the bad (in my opinion) head injury I’d had when I was younger, that left me temporarily blind. Since I got hit in the back of the head the eye doctor said it was a very good chance that it caused trouble, and thank goodness I got my vision back. After that we went to the Eat n Park out there, and managed to get a street car going all the way back here.
We also briefly discussed mommy dearest. I haven’t spoken to her in a while, and she hasn’t called in about a week. Last time she called Cynthia talked to her. The first time she was going to the store and wanted to know if I wanted anything. Cynthia told her milk and potato buds. We didn’t hear from her again until a couple days later when she called to ask when I was coming to get the stuff. Since she had gotten a ride to the store Cynthia asked why she didn’t drop the things off here, and that if it stays down there too long it’ll expire. My mom said that she couldn’t have people drive her all over town. Now, maybe that excuse would work if Cynthia lived across town, but we are literally right up the street, on the same street. A couple days later my mom called from the doctors to say that the nurse took her blood pressure, and that the new blood pressure medication she was taken made her blood pressure too low and that she was so dizzy. She also said that poor white trash bastard has a lump on his back, and that one of his arms gets numb (oh, how horrible). So she called for a Pam pity party. I don’t know what made her think she would get any sympathy from Cynthia, for either of them. Cynthia said he blood pressure sounded great, and that she would be happy to have bp as low as that. And as for the white trash bastard, both my hands were number for over a month, and she didn’t give a shit, but he gets some numbness? The poor, poor man. Then Cynthia started asking her about him again and suddenly my mom had to get off the phone because the doctor would be coming. She called again later, and when Cynthia asked what the doctor said about the blood pressure she didn’t say anything, probably because there was nothing wrong. Cynthia asked her again about the white trash bastard, and they got into a big argument. My mom started talking trash about me. I don’t know everything she said, but some of the things she said was that I never do anything but lay around, that there was nothing wrong with me, and that I should get over it (the things she did to me). Cynthia mentioned that the my doctor said he wouldn’t sign any more disability papers until I had seen a psychologist, and my mom suddenly became very interested in taking me to get “help”, because she wants the money. After they were done Cynthia was swearing about her, and she rarely ever swears. At the most she occasionally says shit, usually just sugar, but this time she actually called her an asshole twice. Mommy dearest has a habit of projecting. Whatever she sees in herself she decides is other peoples problems. Everyone else does nothing, everyone else is a liar, everyone else is a hypochondriac. Meanwhile, all she has ever done when she had off was lay on the couch watching TV, literally not moving, she lies about every single thing, and is always saying something or other is wrong with her. This summer it was cancer. Even though she hadn’t seen a doctor she decided she had cancer, or “something just as bad” (in her words). It’s November now, and it seems she’s given up on trying to get attention that way. She’s been to the doctor quite a lot lately. A couple months ago her work made her go get x-rays because she was having back pain, and I know she’s been to the PCP at least twice in the last month, because she got new blood pressure medication from him, then went again to complain about dizziness. This is the reason I think the doctor has changed his tune in regards to me, my mother has gotten to him, and he won’t listen to me now. I had to prod him for the MRI paper that he had originally given me freely because of the problems I’d been having. But then my mom took the papers for my MRI, CT Scan, and blood test, lost them, and refused to get more. Then when I finally got there again (she took me so she could get him to sign the disability papers so she could get the money for it) she followed him in when he came to see me, and when I tried to take the papers talked down to me. So I know she’s been saying crap about me to him. All he and that nurse (who seems like a real bitch to begin with) care about now is trying to get me to a psychiatrist, and won’t listen to me. Today I wondered to Cynthia if I should take medication. But a) I don’t think it would do any good, and b) why should I have to pay the price for this? My mother is the one who caused this, it’s my mother who is insane. I can’t stand this mindset of “you are depressed. this is not okay. you must be happy. we will make you be happy.” Oh, and mommy dearest has bronchitis again. But she didn’t get it because she smoking. Because she’s not. Even though she was seen smoking. More than once. Everyone else is just mistaken. You know they’re just delusional, and you can’t trust what they see. She’s not a liar or anything…
I won’t say happy.
I think there’s a horror house across the street.

Since I did a guide to the best adoptables/virtual pet sites, I have decided to get a little more in depth and review them. I’m starting with my newest account at Kingdom of Knuffel.
The site is quite nice looking. The graphics and art are very well done. KOfK is also smaller, and has fewer members, so if you are intimidated by the big sites like Neopets, or even Subeta, this would be a better option for you. Unfortunately, there ends the good qualities. This site requires an extremely high level of interaction and offers little in return. The sites currency is called food, food points, or fcs. You use it to by Knuffel, the KOfK’s virutal pets/creatures, clothes and items for your avatar, and material for quests. You earn food through posting in the forum, voting in forum polls, selling items (done through the forum, as there are no user stores) and original art, leveling your Knuffel or having them dig, submitting and getting comments art in the gallery, and rating and commenting on art in the gallery. There is only one game. Quite a few ways, huh? Not enough.
The food you earn from doing these things is miniscule. 4-10 through posts and voting on polls, and even less for voting and commenting in the gallery. You can only get food from the game once a day, and it depends on how well you score. Likewise, the amount of fps you get for leveling your Knuffel varies depending on how high the level is, but it takes 2500 food points to buy a Knuffel. You do not get a Knuffel when you join, you have to buy one from the Knuffel shops. After two and a half days I was able to buy my first Knuffel. It took 72 posts in the forum, probably half that number of polls, and voting and commenting on over 100 gallery items. This is that high level of interaction I was talking about. It’s easy for a dedicated newbie to get up to 72 posts in three days, but it’s not a realistic standard for year round, as there isn’t that much activity in the forum. The activity there is is mostly limited to the spam forum. A website the bases it’s currency around posting in the forum will always end up a spam central. Even the posts that are not in the spam board lack substance.
There is also very little to do. Despite its original copyright date being listed as 2007 the site is devoid of interesting activities. Posting in the forum, feeding/playing with Knuffel, the quests, and the sites lone game are virtually the only things available. The quests don’t seem in any way fun, and the are really only available to established members due to their expense. Ah, the expense. This is the most expensive site I’ve ever come across. Everything costs more, and you get a lot less money for your efforts. Items in the shops cost even more than the Knuffel do, with prices up to 9000. Selling Fairy Coins is the easiest way to make money, earning 6-8k per coin, and the easiest way to clothe your poor newbie avatar. Fairy Coins are earned through donating to the site. But remember, everything costs more here, even the FC. Every € 1.90/$2.50 gets you one coin. So you would have to donate $5 to get just two coins. This site is even more expensive than Neopets! Even VDex Project, which gives donation points per $2.50 gives 2 for each. Treasure Trove, the “FC Mall”, if you will, is where you spend them. It’s a good thing the items there only cost one FC each.
If you are interested in the attitude of the staff, the admin has a rather ignorant stance on ad blocking.
“People who use ad blockers (and do not contribute to the costs by donating) on KOfK are people who expect starkad and me to spend around 200 hours per month working on the site and paying hundreds of $ by ourselves, without being willing to contribute with something as small as “looking” at a ad banner. Quite selfish if you ask me. If all people had that attitude KOfK could not exist.”
Um, no, I expect not to get a virus from your site. Now, understandably, most site owners do not like their users blocking ads, but completely ignoring the #1 reason people do it (the safety of their computers), and making generalizations about them is rude, and yes, ignorant. If it keeps a site I like online I can tolerate ads. What I will not tolerate is having my computer destroyed by viruses, and unfortunately a large majority of them come from ads. Oh, yes, you can “report” an ad if it has a virus in it, but by then it is too late. Even the best anti-virus program can’t stop everything. I’ve lost many irreplaceable files and had computers rendered useless due to viruses, and I do not have the money to buy a new computer every few months, or pay hundreds in repair costs. Yes, I get it. You pay a lot to keep the site you choose to run online. I paid a lot for my computer, and I choose to keep it as virus free as possible. I don’t think that’s selfish.
The site has been online since 2007, and there appears to be no evolution. It is still small, there are still very few members, and there is still nothing to do. In 2010 there should be more real interaction, especially from a site that requires so much attention from its users. If Kingdom of Knuffel ever wants to get out of this rut the owners need to start thinking outside the box.
Kingdom of Knuffel does have potential, and it’s sad seeing it squandered. Those oh so costly items are well made, like all the art on the site, and the Knuffels are attractive. A good looking site like this should have new members coming in droves. The problem site needs more content, new features, and a better money system. A good new feature would be to allow users to see who clicked their Knuffel allowing them to return clicks, and a new way to earn fp could be getting food points per unique Knuffel interacted with. Both would give incentive to click more Knuffel, and encourage more user interaction. Adding more ways to earn fp, as well as adjusting the fp rate would make the site altogether easier, particularly for new members. Without new members and a motivated staff a site cannot grow and cannot change, and the sites that don’t grow and change are doomed to be left on the wayside while better, more innovate sites pass them by. It appears the site will remain stagnant in the months to come, as the webmasters appear content with letting things remain as they are.
Final verdict: Don’t bother. Kingdom of Knuffel is a waste of time as it is now. Even if you do get ahead, or have plenty of money to donate, in a few weeks you’ll have nothing to do. The shiny newness will wear off, and you’ll move on to something better.
I found this quiz through the Duggar/Quiverfull/fundie snarking forum Free Jinger. It’s Beliefnet’s Belief-O-Matic. You answer a series of 20 questions and it tells you what religion your beliefs are most similar too. I didn’t understand all the questions, some were a little too… theological for me, but I did end up scoring in my own religion first, 100%. I’m a Presbyterian, so a liberal Protestant. I scored Seventh Day Adventist last at 24%, whatever that is, but my $cientology score wasn’t low enough for my taste, at 22 with 38%. So, what religion are you, or supposed to be?
1. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (100%)

Or not. Last week my great aunt and I were going to go to Sears in the mall to get my eyes checked. My glasses have been broken for a while now, and I haven’t had a real eye exam in over 5 years, so I am in desperate need of some new frames and a new prescription. We ended up not going because Cynthia heard on the news that it was going to storm. It ended up briefly raining that evening. We finally went yesterday. The news had called for rain again, but only scattered showers. So we ventured out. Getting to South Hills Village is even more complicated than it has been in the past. More and more bus and street car services are being cut, so now it usually takes a street car and a bus both ways. First you have to go downtown than catch the street car that goes all the way out to South Hills Village. Or you have to take the street car halfway to SHV, then take on the rest of the way. Like I said, either way you have to do it twice, because there are almost no street cars going all the way there anymore. Luckily, there was one a little after two, so we caught a bus and went a ways to Mt. Lebanon because Cythia didn’t want to walk up all the hills to got to the street car near us. We waited about 20-30 minutes both times for the bus and street car. When we got to the mall and into Sears one of the people working there said the eye doctor was at lunch and to check back after 3. So we went to get my Visa gift card first. I always get Visa gift cards twice a year, once with my birthday money, and then in the early spring with my Christmas money. I’ve been doing this for years and never had a problem before, but this time the woman didn’t understand that I wanted ALL of the money on there. I had $100, and it’s about a $3 activation fee. So whatever money I have I get whatever left over put on the card. She just couldn’t understand that. So she only put $95 on there and gave me a two dollars and nickle back. I was so pissed. I don’t do this very often and I didn’t have a lot of money to begin with, every dollar counts.
It was after 3 when we went back to Sears and the eye doctor still wasn’t there. We waited for a while, but I started to feel sick so we gave up and went to eat at Eat n Park. The day hadn’t been great so far, but it wasn’t exactly bad. I got my card, and I got a nice lunch. It was near the end of the meal that things started to go downhill at a fast pace. I was seated facing the window so I noticed it getting darker and darker outside, and then wind started to pick up. The trees outside were really flailing. Then it started to rain. Then pour. Until some moments you couldn’t even see more than a few feet outside. I told my aunt she said the weatherman had said “a chance of showers” not “a chance of armagedon”. Like most of the people in there we waited it out. One of the waitresses said they had gotten a call from someone saying they were being advised on the news not to drive. In terms of severity, there have actually been worse storms. It was quite windy and rained a lot, but except for a lot of lightning flashes in the clouds, and probably no more than three cloud to ground lightning strikes, and one big thunder/lightning clap, at was pretty uneventful. The rain was heavy though. It was even coming in one of Eat n Parks windows. The lights also blinked a few times. But nothing gave any indicator of what we were to see later.
After it stopped raining we walked from Eat n Park down to the parking garage, which you have to pass through to get to the street car. We saw two parked buses out front, one broken down, but didn’t think anything of it then. When we got to the street car some people who had parked there to catch the street car were held up at the pay station. When we approached one of the kids with them said the street cars weren’t running and the man said that the power was down and we’d have to take a bus. They left and the guy at the pay station said that a bus would be coming and we could take that and catch a different street car (he turned out to be wrong). We went to one of the buses out front where another group of stranded people had gathered. We were the last ones on and we left. We came upon what looked like a mass exodus out of the city. Cars were backed up everywhere and many places were without power. Even some traffic lights were down. I told Cynthia there should have been a cop there directing traffic, and there usually is in these situations. Now I guess one was on the way, but he was having trouble because of all the traffic. Some streets were closes because of down trees. I saw one street roped off with a huge tree that had tumbled right into the middle of it. Everyone on the bus was staring at the chaos around them. I think a few micro bursts had to have happened, because I saw one tree that had not only fallen down, but had had its roots ripped right out of the ground. There was about 3 feet of roots/dirt attached to it. Another tree had fallen on the back of someones car. Some trees only had branches snap off, albeit large ones. And of course there were many down power lines. Unfortunately for us our troubles weren’t over yet. As soon as we had set off the bus had been lurching quite a bit, and when we got to Banksville and Potomac the whole thing just stopped. One of the women asked the driver to explain what was going on, because most don’t they just leave you sitting there for a while, but this one seemed nice and after that kept us informed. He said that the last bus he was on broken down and they have him another broken bus, the trasmission and generator were down and he was waiting for another bus to come help. We waited for a while, but after talking on this phone a few times he told us we could stay and wait or walk up the hill to the street car (wrong again). Because of the traffic and how many downed trees there were it would take a while for anyone to get there. Most people decided to take the hill, except for one woman turned back because of how steep it was. And it was steep. Pittsburgh is a very hilly city with some very steep hills, and added to it the uneven and cracked pavements it can be hard to navigate. It took us a while to get up because it was a couple miles. We continued to see more split trees and power lines down. I was on the lookout for them all the time, because many were probably still live.
Now, I said that both guys were wrong because when we got within distance of where the street car was it was clear none were running. There were many people standing around, and more backed up traffic. None of the places there had power either. We thought that was strange because normally SHV gets bad weather, but our area always seems to avoid it. Not this time. Three street cars in a row, the first one a double, were going out towards the South Hills area were finally going in when we finally made it to Potomac/Dormont. There still weren’t any street cars going our way so we decided to continue walking. A few minutes later one came but we didn’t bother to try to get on. Cynthia wondered why all the street cars including the ones earlier were moving so slow, and I think it’s because they had to be on the lookout for trees on the tracks. If they were going at normal speeds and it one they could derail, and even if they stayed on the tracks people would get hurt when it impacted. Of course with all the street cars moving slow and traffic backed up to begin with people were throwing little hissy fits and honking their horns. It was so ridiculous. Everyone was in the same situation, there’s nothing anyone can do about it. You’re probably not on your way to the hospital, so just deal with it. And they were lucky to be in their cars. We walked about 2-3 miles that day, they just got to sit in their cars in the air conditioning. Before we got home we continued to see downed trees and power lines wherever we went. There were the constant noise of police and fire engine sirens in the distance. Walking home we passed one ambulance, but his sirens weren’t on, saw one police car zoom by, and one small fire engine passed us, sirens blaring. We saw him later parked in someones driveway, but it was a small truck, and there weren’t any hoses out, so I think a tree fell on someones house. We finally got back and a neighbor came out to say how bad it was here, and that some branches fell off her tree and ours. She also said the power was out.
Cynthia had been worried that one of the trees behind her house would fall on the people behind us, but they didn’t. A large branch fell into our yard, the other neighbors had some branches fall in ours, and two trees in ours and there’s were bent over. After surveying the damage and finding nothing too bad, we got out the candles and flash lights, and since she has a land line, Cynthia called Duquesne light to get the ETA on electricity. They didn’t have a time frame, but the recording said 44,000 homes were without power. Then she began calling the extended family. I didn’t bother calling my mom, since she has Comcast, and when the power is out the phone is too. I didn’t try her cell phone because I didn’t think she’d want to waste her minutes. She did call later on though, after she had been drinking a while. The power didn’t come on that evening, so we were left in the dark with nothing to do. I tried to lay down, but even though I was exhausted, it was so hot I couldn’t sleep. I kept checking my little digital clock (Harry Potter golden snitch clip on) and the streets to see if power had come back. The old folks home near here had it of course, because they have a generator. Because Pittsburgh is so hilly you can see pretty far in the distance, and I could see people getting their lights back, until we were the only area around here that didn’t. The moon was very bright at least, even though it was cloudy, and earlier on when the moon as out, it looked yellow orange. Very pretty. If it hadn’t been so cloudy I know we could have seen a lot of stars, since this is the only time we would have been able to. It’s usually too bright in the city to see anything. I finally did fall asleep, and when I woke up at 8 there was still no power. Went back to sleep, and at 1, no power. Cynthia said 22000 homes were still without electricity. Later on someone on Vodeli, a street near here said they had been told not to expect it until Saturday and Sunday. Brookline got their power back, Naomi, a cousin, got her power back, and Gary (probably a cousin) in Carrick got his back. But Pap Pap who lives in an apartment building not too far from Naomi didn’t have any power. So it was spotty. Brookline and Beechview are close to here and most of them had their power, Mt Lebanon didn’t, and I don’t know about Dormont, both those are the places surrounding here. Cynthia, my mom, and I were very pissed off to here no electricity until the weekend. It had already been 24 hours since the power had gone out, and 2-3 days? Ridiculous! The ice cream was melted, the ice cubes were melted, and everything in the fridge was going bad. I settled myself down with some catalogs and magazines to try to distract myself from the heat and boredom. Suddenly, after 5, the power came back on. I heard some people screaming in the streets, and Cynthia and I were just like “praise the lord!” So I got the fan on, and plugged the computer in, because I had already used up it’s 1:40 minutes battery. We’re just happy to have power back now.
The animals were going crazy after the storm happened. I saw a few squirrels running around, and a chipmunk dark across the street, and Cynthia found a poor dead bird this morning. She mentioned that she hadn’t even heard any birds today, so I don’t know where they all went. The only things that aren’t acting strange is the bugs. In the early fall there is a barrage of what they call “stink bugs”. They’re trying to get in everyone’s homes for the winter. Last year, or two years ago, my mom and I were downtown this time of year were saw a these beetle looking bugs everywhere. It was like a plague, they were literally everywhere. We had no idea what they were. I saw an article last week on the stink bugs and I recognized them. They’ve been all over the windows trying to get in, and today, since the windows have been open, one made it in. Cynthia flushed him down the drain in the kitchen. It’s like an invasion. There’ll be 4 at a time on several windows. I saw one caught in a spiders web, and I felt a little sorry for it, but it’s so disgusting having them all over the place all the time that I can’t spare too much pity for them.
The night before last I did manage to see a planet. I heard one was going to be really bright, and if it was that bright here I can’t imagine how it would look in the country. I was just in the living room and I saw a bright speck of light through the gap in the curtains, and was surprised to see the planet. I got an extra treat when a few seconds later I was a raccoon run across the street. At first I thought it was one of the cats of the woman across the street because she lets them out, but I noticed it was built differently. Then I saw it’s point tail and its mask and I recognized it. I was so happy to see the cute little raccoony. I’ve never seen on in person before. Apparently there’s some possums around here too, the woman with the cats leaves food out for them. Not as cute as the coon, but I wouldn’t want them to starve either. I hope they all stay safe though because the people around here are jag offs, especially the neighbors who go hunting. They have a couple of emaciated hunting dogs that get left outside all the time. And that’s how they treat their expensive purebred dogs. After we got back after the storm and we were looking out back we saw the two dogs out in their yard. I hope they didn’t leave the poor things out in the storm.
Edit Edit Edit!!!!: After about an hour and a half the power went out. Bastards.
A minute later: And the power is back on? For now…
Another minute: Off. Right after I turned the fan back on…
Turned the fan back on… now stay on!
