Before signing up I sent Beachcomber an email, just to make sure they were still around. Unlike Holdfire they don’t seem to have a forum, blog, or Twitter account, so there’s no way to tell if they’re still active. Just looking at Holdfire itself wouldn’t clue you in, but seeing that their Twitter account hasn’t been updated in almost 4 months is enough. I soon got an email back saying they were still alive and kicking, with an lol thrown in. A little unprofessional, but prompt. After signing up I soon got a call from them, which I was expecting. Most hosts call to confirm but most hosts are big companies who use automated systems. I had to talk to an actual, human person. I am determined never to do it again!!! Outside my family at least… At least there’s comfort in the fact that phone anxiety is actually pretty common. After that my account was set up within minutes. So far Beachcomber has had great uptime. But there have been some problems, the biggest being something to do with the way the server is set up. I’ve never had this problem with any host before, but there was some server setting interfering with WordPress and Enthusiast. It really, really drove me crazy, but eventually I found a solution to it, and now everything is working perfectly now. Though my IP was locked out for several hours due to my tinkering. I have unpinned my status post, but I am still not done uploading everything. I had almost 24000 files to upload, which is a lot for a normal connection. With my borrowed wireless that has close to dial-up speeds it takes fucking forever. Some files I had to upload twice because the first time they didn’t upload correctly. I still have a few thousand at least to go, but I’ve got all my fanlistings up, as well as this blog, which are the important things. TFL and TAFL have had to deal with a lot of messages from me for the past year, what with all my internet and hosting problems. Hopefully now they will both be corrected. My mother was wrong, and Cyndy was coming back tonight, not yesterday. So I’ll call her tomorrow and Monday, and hopefully, hopefully, hopefully I’ll have internet installed this week or the first week of October. The internet has been particularly shitty the past few days, not that it isn’t always. The way to find out whether internet is working for me is this: Is this internet not working? It’s not working. Is the internet working? It’s not working. “The internet is working” just means Comcast hasn’t set up their blockade, “The internet isn’t working” means they have. It doesn’t mean I can always actually get on. I really want to get internet before this connection goes down again. Because it is going down again. This has been happening since February and every time it happens again sooner, and for a longer period of time. I know the signs now and when the blockade is approaching, and the signs are here. Oh, and I had to be responsible recently… I had money leftover after hosting and… I had to spent $36 on flash drives. *sigh* I’m getting 32 GB, but you don’t actually get all that. It would actually take 60 GB to backup everything I need to keep safe, but I don’t have that kind of money right now. Spending that much on two 16 GB drives that won’t even hold everything I need was hard, when I could buy a lot more other things for less, but it’s important. Eventually I found a different set of nameservers in my WHM panel as I was thinking about trying to add a new account with one of the domains and seeing if that would work. I changed ns1/2.holdfire.net to ns1/2.firedns.net. Still wouldn’t work. I had to repark the domain then change it to firedns before tokoyblue finally started displaying. I changed black-cello.org, put it back as an addon and that got it to work too. I have no idea why the regular holdfire worked for every other domain except those two, but throughout the entire thing Holdfire was thoroughly unhelpful. Not that there’s anything new there. I guess they didn’t know what the problem was so they chose to ignore it. That shows how much customers and their sites mean to them. And I know that I’m not the only one who had problems due to their screw ups that day. I didn’t have this many problems with Lypha even, well known to be one of the worst hosts ever. And even their support is better too, which is saying something. I guess that’s because Lypha is a real hosting company and not a “mom and pop.” I’ve been thinking about switching to Shark Space, Web Hosting Buzz, or Fanst. I have uptime monitors on the first two, and I’ve used the last one before so I know it has great uptime. The only problem is I don’t have a lot of money to spend, and Shark Space and WHB both cost more than HF/FS do and I’d have to have a regular hosting account not a reseller. Those are really expensive on the first too, and Fanst doesn’t even off that or cPanel. The final and biggest issue with switching now is time. My account here needs to be paid for between early and mid April, and it’s probably going to be the end of March before I am able to get a Visa gift card. That doesn’t leave much time to get things up and checked. I’ve lost a lot of files before doing quick host changes, and I don’t want to do that again. I really don’t know what to do. I’ll see how the monitors check out before I make a decision. On an unrelated note for some reason I’ve not only started getting a lot more spam at my fl email account, Google’s have a lot more trouble catching it. I can’t tell you how many Viagra and Meds emails I’ve deleted from my inbox that should have been easy to catch. One thing I’ve always loved about Gmail is what a good spam catcher it is. Haven’t seen this problem with my main account. And how many times can I say problem in one post? Tags: holdfire, online, websites |

![]() I hate holidays. There’s no mail, nothing on TV, and everything’s always closed. So much inconvenience over so little. I’m not a little kid, so holidays don’t mean much to me anymore. Not even Christmas or Thanksgiving. I’m not usually with my family on those holidays, and we don’t have any money so lot’s of food and gifts are out of the question. And holidays like Independence Day are the worst, because you really get nothing out of them. There’s fireworks. Big whoop, I’m not five and I’m not a man, so I don’t find all the sparkly colors or loud noises fun. I especially don’t find them fun when there are idiots setting them off right outside my house, and starting the day before. It’s not like New Years people. And I forgot (I don’t know how since they do it every year) how they always play country music while showing the fireworks on TV. Even worse patriotic country music. I just can’t stand to listen to them “sing” about how much they looove America in their redneck drawl. It doesn’t help that I have a headache. All I’ve eaten today are about 1 turkey sandwich with mayo (because I didn’t finish the first one, then later I had half of one), milk, and maybe 3 or 4 potato chips. But now sometimes when I eat I get an awful migraine. I thought it was the chips that did it, even though I only had a few, but it got worse after the second half. I don’t know what it is, but it’s happening more and more often, and it sucks because before a few months ago (when all my health went to hell) I’d never really had migraines before and I hate it. SciFi (which is now becoming SyFy for some stupid reason) has been having a Twilight Zone marathon for the past few days, and I was watching a little yesterday but gave up today because most of the episodes I’d already seen or didn’t want to see. TVLand is having a Roseanne marathon so I guess I’ll watch that for a while before I go to bed. I have to get up at around 11 tomorrow to go over my great aunts and shred some paper of hers, while my mom is supposed to come over and clean, but she didn’t last time. I was there waiting until almost 8 o’clock and she never came. Now she wants to clean in case we get Verizon since Comcast raised their prices again. She better clean fast because I’m not staying over there too late. Cynthia doesn’t have air conditioning, and Masterpiece Mystery is playing the new Miss Marple tomorrow. And since I’m being kicked out of the day, I guess I won’t be getting any school done. Oh well, be it on her own head. Tags: 4th of july, Health, holdfire, holiday, hosting |
